DC announces "Lobo" movie

Perhaps in an effort to further “toughen up” their image in the wake of their recent success with the recent, darker, Batman movie re-launch, DC comics has recently announced that a “Lobo” movie is now in development.
For those of you that may not be familiar with the character Lobo, he was essentially DC’s poster boy for early 90s “extreme” violence and “attitude”. Beginning life as a mockery of similar characters in the Marvel universe (most notably Wolverine and the Punisher), Lobo eventually became one of the most popular characters in the DC universe for the better part of a decade.

Already two A-list actors have been attached to the project, which is set to be directed by music video and feature film director Joseph Kahn (Britney Spears, U2, Torque). Viggo Mortenson has signed on to play Lobo, and when asked about his decision to take the role, he had this to say: “I know a lot of people won’t believe this, but I actually became quite the comic fan while shooting the Lord of the Rings movies. I read everything from Lobo to Grendel, The Watchmen, Transmetropolitan… there wasn’t much else to do between takes! And a lot of these guys were really into that… I actually would’ve liked to do the Watchmen movie, too, I’m a big Alan Moore fan, but the timing just didn’t work out. When the offer to do Lobo came around, I could not in good conscience pass it up. Lobo is a real challenge, there’s a depth there, behind all the… carnage. It’s actually not at all dissimilar to my character in Eastern Promises in that regard.”

The script for the Lobo film was penned by collaboration between Lobo writer Alan Grant and Skip Woods, writer of video game movie adaptation “Hitman” as well as the upcoming “G.I. Joe” movie. Little is known about the plot of the film, other than that it will star Sir Ben Kingsley as Lobo’s green skinned interplanetary nemesis, Vril Dox. Lobo is expected to be released in the spring of 2009.
